Even though the school day ends at 3:12 p.m., work for many students is not over. Some students have homework, practice or jobs, while others have no activities at all. Whether students have busy schedules or not, new after school programs are available and involvement is highly encouraged.

All the activities offered were collected from a survey that was filled out by both students and parents. Those that were picked ranked highest in popularity on the survey.  Keep in mind that activities may be subject to change from one semester to the next depending on involvement.

“If I see an area where something blows up, I’ll see about maybe doing it on another day so we can have more spots,” Emily Hall, School Improvement Specialist said. “Or even next semester, maybe I’ll offer it two times, or even hire more people.”

The program begins Oct. 1 and is offered Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. with different events being held on different days.

The list of activities for this semester, including teachers and times are as follows:

  • Yoga/Pilates: Mrs. Ledezma and Mrs. Brinkley
    • Monday, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m and 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
    • Wednesday, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Coding: Coach Gray
    • Tuesday, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Robotics: Mr. Mouritsen
    • Monday, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • ACT Prep Math: Coach Gray
    • Thursday, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • ACT English/Reading: Mrs. Goodman
    • Thursday, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Health/First Aid: Mrs. Castle
    • Wednesday, 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Gaming: Mrs. Foster
    • Tuesday, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Cooking: Ms. Foust and Mrs. Burleson
    • Thursday, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Most of the activities will take place in the main building. Gaming will be held in the cafeteria, and cooking will be held in teacher Anne Creekmore’s room. Transportation will be provided to students that need it. A bus will pick students up at 5:30 p.m. in front of the north annex.

Being that this is the first year the program is offered to students, Hall and her colleagues have big hopes that they will teach the students lessons they cannot learn in class.

“We hope maybe by extending the school day a little bit, we’ll have some valuable things you’ll participate in,” Hall said. “The goals of our program are that obviously, it’ll make your high school stuff go better, and you can work on another project that maybe you’re not getting your classroom credit for, but that your working toward. We want to build relationships among students, we also want this to be culture building among students.”

It is not too late to sign up for the programs. If a student is interested they can email, or stop by and see Hall or science teacher Whitney Taylor.
